The Entrance Hall

The Museum front entrance hall gives a good idea of what is in store for it's visitors. The museum is brimming with relics and history of the islands and the whaling days. Note the Wandering Albatross (Diomeda exulans) flying above and the Reindeer antlers to the right above the door. (Photograph by Al Harrison)

Whaler's Pastimes

This exhibit, just inside the front door shows some whales teeth and the instruments that whalers would carve the "scrimshaw" they were so famous for. At the rear of the case is a model whale catcher in a bottle. It was made by Norman Jamieson from the Shetlands. Norman worked in South Georgia as a boy and came back to the islands as boatswain on the M.V. Oil Mariner. Some of his photographs are featured on other pages.
