Whale Harpooned

A sight that is (thankfully) rarely seen today - a whale fighting for it's life with a harpoon embedded in it's back. Explosive charges were fitted, but sometimes the whale endured a long and agonizing death.

Almost Alongside

This whale is almost alongside the whaling ship, but is clearly still alive. It is difficult to imagine the pain and suffering that these magnificent creatures had to endure.
